Best Huel Alternatives – 9 Cheaper Substitute Meal Replacements That Are Better

Searching round the internet trying to find not only the best alternatives to Huel’s meal replacement but also the cheaper ones as well?

Well good, you’ve made it to the right place.

Meal replacements, at least for me, are a godsend. They give you the best possible superfood nutrients and all of the good calories that you need to power you through your day and keep you in tip top shape.

All of this, and you do not even have to cook and go to the grocery store. You mix up a shake and ka’bam. Wahla, you’ve got a supershake in a matter of a couple minutes. Or less..

It’s healthier, faster, better, just all around your best option.

Here are the two I am using (I just updated it for my 2022 year)

Right now I am using Ka’chava’s Chocolate Meal Replacement and it is by far my favorite out of all of the ones that I have tried and to be honest I think it is the best substitute for Huel’s meal replacement.

You can check it out for a discount by clicking here

If you prefer a less filling smoother taste (more of a protein shake), then LYFE Fuel is going to be the better option for you.

You can check LYFE FUEL out here. I personally like their essentials shake. You can see the one I get here.

Feel free to also use my name (first name twice) in the coupon field BENBENMAYZ to get a discount. it should work for you. for now… lol

But for those that are currently not even using a meal replacement like Huel or some alternative that we have listed below then I’ll be the first to tell you that you are truly missing out and you need to be jumping on the meal replacement bandwagon.

One of these meal replacements that people have come to welcome and enjoy is… yeah you guessed it.

Huel..

yeah.. The word around the fitness community is that Huel’s meal replacement shake is quite possibly the best meal replacement shake on the market..

But are there any alternatives out there that are not only cheaper, but better, or at least as good for a better price?

Although Huel is one of the most sought out meal replacement products today, there are lots of other practical and effective alternatives you can consider that are not only up to par with huel but are also a bit more affordable.

Let’s check them out and compare what they provide versus what Huel brings to the table.

Huel Alternatives: The Best Options for 2021

Below you are going to find the best alternatives to Huel’s product line up. You will find a cheap option, the best alternative for weight loss,  my favorite huel alternative, and a few others that are great substitutes for Huel.

AmpleThe Ultimate Meal Replacement Alternative to Huel

huel alternative ample meal replacement

Why is Ample a good alternative to huel?

Ample claims to be the ultimate complete meal-in-a-bottle created from high-quality whole-food ingredients with no fillers or junk, for optimal nutrition.

If you skim through Ample’s website, you’ll find that the brand emphasizes three main goals:

  1. Minimize occurences of insulin spikes;
  2. Reduce inflammation; and
  3. Improve gut health.

Ample takes the road less taken to healthy living by increasing antioxidants and adding probiotics to its products without skimping on the macronutrients our bodies need.

Ample has three formulas crafted to meet a wide variety of dietary needs: The Ample O(riginal), Ample K(etogenic), and Ample V(egan) but we’ll only focus on Ample O.

Ample O’s Ingredients and Nutrition Facts – What’s in it?

best huel alternative ample o ingredients and what is in it

For Ample, top-notch prime ingredients is key to helping you achieve optimal nutrition and starting or maintaining a healthy diet. It is guaranteed to have no soy, gluten, GMOs, and artificial sweeteners, making it a great alternative to Huel’s meal replacement shake.

The 400 calorie meal has a carefully developed macronutrient profile containing 25 grams of protein, 25 grams of carbohydrates, 21 grams of fats, and 10 grams of fiber.

There’s heaps of probiotic bacteria found in each serving of Ample O making it gentle for your stomach.

According to science, probiotic bacteria could aid in reducing exercise-induced stress. While research on this topic is still in its infancy, it is definitely promising.

Who is Ample O Best For?

Ample O is a great meal replacement for those that are not on any particular diet but are looking to maintain a hearty and healthy lifestyle.

However, if you’re lactose intolerant, you’re better off trying their plant-based formula or the Ample V.

If you’re on a keto diet, Ample O can be a good supplement but Ample K would be the perfect fit for you as it has a higher content of good fat compared to the other two formulations.

Pricing

A bulk order of 15 bottles for the 400 calorie Ample O is priced pretty cheap when considering you are getting quite a bit for your money. And if you order on their site, they offer a 15% discount to monthly delivery subscribers.

Sidenote

A downside to Ample is an absence of many micronutrients we easily find in other meal replacement shakes but may be due to the brand refusing to add an artificial vitamin & mineral mix to their products.

Aside from that, Ample O has only one flavor available (Vanilla). It’s not so bad, though, as you can use it as a base to create other flavors.

310 NutritionBest Huel Alternative designed for Weight Loss

best huel alternative for weight loss

The 310 Shake is a meal replacement that claims “ingredient lists so good that your doctor will be thoroughly impressed.” It was formulated to aid in weight loss and develop habits for eating clean while staying active.

By replacing a regular meal with a shake that’s high in protein, it may help with managing weight.  The brand also claims their 310 Shake can help build lean muscle.

If you are looking to get rid of that mom butt, or grow muscle in the long run but you’re unable to prepare one of those healthy foods, then this shake makes for a great replacement.

By providing a full body approach to wellness, 310 Nutrition guarantees that their product helps to cleanse and detoxify your system, boost metabolism, suppress appetite, and increase your energy.

310 Nutrition – Ingredients and Nutrition Facts – What’s in it?

nutrition facts 310 meal replacement the best huel alternative for weight loss

According to their website, the 310 Shake is made only from the finest ingredients from the planet and each serving contains 90 calories with 15 grams of plant-based proteins, 7 grams of carbohydrates, 5 grams of fiber, and 1 gram of fat.

It’s free from gluten, dairy, and GMOs. The 310 Shake also has no caffeine and artificial sweeteners in them.

310 Nutrition states that their 310 meal replacement shakes have four high quality ingredients, namely:

  1. Tri-Plex Blend of pea, hemp, and brown rice for their proteins;
  2. 310 Greens Blend for their fiber;
  3. Vitamin and Mineral Blend containing vitamins E and A, magnesium, calcium, and potassium; and
  4. Probiotics for digestive health.

The vegan 310 Shake has many flavors you can choose from including Toasted Coconut, Gingerbread, Vanilla, Vanilla Chai, Salted Caramel, Chocolate, and Strawberry.

Who is 310 Best For? Who Should Take 310 Nutrition?

While 310 Nutrition Shakes are mostly plant-based, they also have a meal replacement shake that has whey protein that’s part of their ingredients.

If you are aiming to lose weight or building lean muscle mass, whether or not you’re following a vegan diet, 310 Nutrition’s Meal Replacement Shake can be a good supplement for you.

Due to the low fat content it has per serving, it may not be a good fit for those on a Keto diet.

Pricing

The 310 shakes come priced pretty cheap per package and each package will give you a full month’s worth of servings. And if you subscribe to them on their site, you get 25% off.

Sidenote

Most brands recommend that consumers should only replace 1 meal with their products. 310 Nutrition, on the other hand, suggests that you replace 2 meals with their 310 shakes to experience full weight loss and nutrition benefits.

While the meal replacement is advertised as a supplement to weight management, the brand firmly states:

“Any weight loss resulting from a 310 shake is probably due to its high protein content and the resulting calorie deficit rather than the specific types of protein consumed.”

Ka’chavaMy Favorite (Best Tasting) Huel Alternative (it’s cheaper too)

kachava meal replacement review

Just so you know, this is the stuff that I use daily. You can read my full Kachava review here.

I also did an in-depth review and comparison of Ka’chava and Huel to see which one was better.

Hint: Ka’chava Beat out Huel Pretty Badly

Why is Ka’chava the best alternative to Huel’s Meal Replacement?

Ka’chava is a plant-based protein blend that its founders claim to be “THE CLEANEST, MOST NUTRIENT-DENSE MEAL IMAGINABLE.

Ka’chava is made out of 100% high-quality ingredients that are blended together to create this big on-the-go meal shake that keeps you in tip-top shape.

Ka’chava is highly effective for weight loss and management if you take it in place of food or meals that are less healthy or have higher calories. Ka’chava fills you up quickly without any bloating.

Ka’chava’s Ingredients and Nutrition Facts – What’s in it?

kachava nutrition facts and ingredients review

Ka’chava has the right balance of essentials required by the body such as fiber, proteins, and good fat in order to promote healthy living and curb pesky hunger cravings.

A serving of Ka’chava has 24 grams of carbohydrates, 25 grams of protein, 4.5 grams of fat, and 9 grams of fiber. The micronutrients found in Ka’chava are mostly 50% than the recommended DV.

Ka’chava meal replacement is a superfood meal replacement that’s on the top of its game, being vegan-friendly and free from gluten, soy, and dairy.

It has no zero artificial ingredients or preservatives. It’s the ideal blend of superfoods that can nourish and sustain your body throughout the day.

Some of the superfoods found in Ka’chava meal replacement are acai, amaranth, chia, chlorella, coconut, maqui, maca, and a whole lot more.

Ka’chava comes in two different flavors, Vanilla and Chocolate. I personally prefer the Vanilla flavor because of how well it tastes and mixes. It’s one of the best powders for smoothies, and particularly safe for those looking for an ideal protein powder for sensitive stomachs.

Who is Ka’chava best for? Who should take it?

Ka’chava is best for someone who is constantly on the go or who simply does not want to spend too much time prepping a meal without compromising health. Kachava has its alternatives too but it’s good enough to be positioned as one of the top meal replacements out there.

Ka’chava is perfect for those sensitive to dairy, gluten, and soy,  those who want to maintain low-fat and vegan diets, and those looking to increase their protein intake.

Pricing

A bag containing 15 meals is priced dirt cheap also, and their site offers a $10 discount for every bag ordered if you register for their monthly subscription. They also offer free shipping within the United States for every order of 2 bags.

Sidenote

Ka’chava’s site is straightforward about this saying that their meal replacement shake is not designed for any quick-fix diets, but when taken in place of a meal, is very good for weight loss.

According to their website, Ka’chava can’t claim that its products are 100% certified organic for several reasons but their team is working hard to get the certification soon.

Lastly, Ka’chava currently doesn’t ship internationally and is only available in the US.

Sidenote

Ambronite recommends 1 scoop for a snack and 3 scoops if you’re taking it as a meal replacement.

Ambronite’s Complete Meal shake lacks probiotic bacteria or digestive enzymes in their ingredients which would have been great for more potential digestive health benefits.

Who is Garden of Life Best for? Who should take Garden of Life?

Everyone can try it! Most especially if you’re looking to increase your protein intake or you’re sensitive to gluten, soy, dairy, and nuts.

However, due to the low amount of fat in the brand’s meal replacement, those on a strict Ketogenic diet would not benefit from it.

A tub of 36.6 oz or roughly 28 meals is priced the cheapest of the bunch, but will vary depending on where you buy it.

For those on a tight budget but are still looking out for their health and well-being, Garden of Life’s Raw Organic Meal is a good choice.

This is our cheapest

Sidenote

Some customers have complained about the texture of the shake being sandy or grainy and the taste may come off as chalky at times if you don’t mix it well.

If your body is not used to taking in products with high fiber content, Raw Organic Meal may cause you to feel bloated and gassy for the first few days or so.

SoylentMost Similar, More Affordable Huel Alternative

soylent is the superior alternative to huel

Soylent, the direct competitor to Huel. Is Soylent better than Huel?

Soylent also holds its own against other options, like you can see in this bout between soylent and Ensure, or this comparison between Soylent and its alternatives all of which are great shakes mind you.

Soylent’s Powder Mix claims to be a complete meal that’s pocket-friendly, sustainable, and satisfying to every customer.

Developed by Rob Rhinehart, Soylent was conceptualized to be a meal replacement that can simplify nutrition while making it cost-effective and comprehensive.

Soylent defends their stance on being pro-GMO while being pro-sustainability, mentioning that their concerns are based on rapidly diminishing resources against the rapid growth of the world’s population.

Soylent’s Ingredients and Nutrition Facts – What’s in it?

better alternative to huel

For every scoop of Soylent Powder, you get 20 grams of protein from soy protein isolate, 41 grams of carbohydrate, 20 grams of fat, 6 grams of fiber, and 26 vitamins and minerals.

Soylent uses soy for its bioavailability. Soy is easily absorbed by the body and does not require a lot of resources to produce proteins. It’s texture also helps create an optimal flavor profile for the meal replacement.

Soylent uses GMOs in their meal replacement powder. The company states on their website the following reason for using GMOs:

“We believe genetically modified organisms (GMOs) can be a safe and economic option for food production. GMO crops can provide nutritious, sustainable, and efficient yields that will help in maximizing the land in which they are grown.”

Sucralose, an artificial, non-nutritive sweetener, and maltodextrin, an artificial white powder that acts as a thickener in many processed foods,  are present in Soylent Powder products.

Who is Soylent Best for? Who should take it?

Judging from the macronutrient breakdown of Soylent’s meal replacement, Soylent is best suited for those who are looking for the most nutrient dense meal replacement shake so that they can feel full and not have to fighter hunger cravings for several hours. This is because of the higher healthy fats and the increased amount of calories in their shakes.

Soylent has emphasized on their site that their products are not designed to be a weight loss tool, thus, not an optimal meal replacement if you’re trying to lose weight.

Soylent can be an option for those who have no known allergies to soy and gluten, and for those who don’t mind artificial and synthetic ingredients added to their meal replacement.

Pricing

A pouch containing 35 meals is priced cheaply as well, and customers get a 5% discount if they opt to subscribe to Soylent’s monthly subscription.

If you’re strapped for cash and are not looking for clean, organic, and vegan meal replacements then Soylent can be a cheap alternative to Huel.

Sidenote

As mentioned before, Soylent uses GMOs and artificial ingredients for cost-effectiveness and improved taste.

Soylent products are also packed with a lot of fat which may be more than our bodies actually need. The USDA recommends that saturated fat consumed should be less than 10% of the total calorie intake.

Soylent’s products have been recalled several times in the past few years. Following reports of diarrhea, vomiting, and other digestive problems from consumers, the company had voluntarily pulled their products from shelves. If you end up having any issues there are many alternatives to Soylent you can pick from.

If you are trying to manage your weight, Vega One can help you reach your protein and nutritional needs as you lose unwanted body fat.

Pricing

A large tub or 29.2 oz with 19 to 22 servings is currently priced just right. Vega also offers a 20% discount for every order if you join their Vega Plant Co/op or just basically subscribing for recurring orders.

Pricing

Sidenote

While the Essentials Shake is cheaper than other popular meal replacements in the market, many note that its price is still a bit steep for their budgets.

What about Huel? Should I Get it or Get an Alternative?

Huel – a play on the words human and fuel – is a powdered meal replacement product marketing itself as a nutritionally complete and balanced meal consumer can prepare within 2 minutes.

According to Huel’s co-founder, “Huel is a nutritionally complete, convenient, affordable, and 100% vegan solution for the time poor.”

should i get an alternative to huel or buy huels meal replacement

Should you get an alternative to Huel?

This is the question that is going to depend entirely on you. If you are someone who is wanting the best meal replacement with the best possible refined taste and one that contains all of the best possible nutrients, vitamins, and nutrition and do not care about paying a bit more for it, then Huel is going to be the best meal replacement shake for you.

Huel is becoming a dominator in the meal replacement industry and righteously so. They spend countless times and effort trying to formulate the best possible ingredients to make the best meal replacement shake on the market.

Along with Ka’chava, Huel is the stuff that I use daily. I do it because I have tried many of the others and I just found this one to be the best tasting one there is and it’s not all that expensive when you consider the cost per meal. It’s cheaper than what I normally would spend on home cooking.

There are alternatives, but they are not Huelalternative… did that make sense? not really.

But if you are not after the best of just about everything meal replacement, and want to find a cheaper alternative then I would suggest grabbing the Garden of Life as a cheaper Huel alternative. Garden of Life is a meal replacement that has a ton of nutrition for the cost.

It’s my recommendation for someone looking for a cheaper alternative to Huel.

What’s in Huel?

whats in huel and why should i get an alternative

Huel Powder is high in carbohydrates and protein, rich in phytonutrients, and contains all 27 essential vitamins and minerals. It is vegan, soy-free, and GMO-free.

A serving of Huel contains 400 calories with 30 grams of protein, 17 grams of fat, 46 grams of carbohydrates, and 7 grams of fiber.

Huel consists of oats, ground flaxseed, and tapioca starch, and extracts its protein source from peas and brown rice.

However, it prominently uses sucralose as a sweetener, maltodextrin as a thickener, and tapioca starch, along with other synthetic ingredients which health professionals advise against.

Huel advises customers that tree nuts are present in its product due to their use of coconuts, and makes note of other ingredients having possibly had contact with crustaceans and other fish products.

Pricing

Huel offers a 34-meal package that is priced decently, as a one-time purchase. However, regular customers receive a 10% discount when making subscription-based purchases.

Praises & Criticisms

According to reviews, Huel offers “100% Complete Nutrition”, is both convenient and cost-effective, and cuts out potential food waste. It’s entirely vegan and very simple to use.

Despite the benefits, many newcomers to Huel are put off by its gritty texture, weaker flavours, and tendency to cause flatulence.

Other gripes come from those who try to replace every meal with the liquid concoction, which can lead to disappointment and bloating.

Huel has high carbohydrate content which contributes to more water retention. This may lead to weight gain.

More Suitable Options

While Huel has numerous benefits, no meal replacement will suit everyone perfectly. Depending on your dietary restrictions, health goals, and flavor preferences, you may find that a different option is better for your needs and tastes.

Ample’s all-natural approach and probiotic-rich make-up will appeal to those turned off by the complaints of Huel causing bloating and flatulence.

Ka’chava is another option to be considered for those who are looking to avoid artificial ingredients.

Additionally, both have lower carbohydrate content compared to Huel which may be desirable for those looking to lose weight.

Premium meal replacements like Ample and Ka’chava use whole real-food ingredients without any synthetic additives. Both are also guaranteed to be gluten-free.

At the end of the day, we’re all for a healthier lifestyle but it can be hard to choose which meal replacement is best for us. Going for a more natural alternative should always be the first step toward your health goal.
