Best Soylent Alternatives – Cheaper, Tastier, & Better Substitutes

We all know that Soylent is one of the best meal replacements shakes that you can get your hands on.

However, as is the case with almost any product of any kind, you can, with some research and effort, find replacements that are better, cheaper or both.

Hello Kachava! (My favorite... BY FAR) Give it a look on their site here. It's so far superior I was actually quite surprised. Here is the flavor I get.

The ones that I’m reviewing below will give you all the nutrition benefits you need to have an edge in your daily life!

Without further ado, here are the best Soylent alternatives that have nutrient-dense profiles and are full of superfood ingredients!

What is a Meal Replacement?

What is a Meal Replacement

Alternative meals, unlike protein bars and juices, are substitutes aimed to decrease the overall calorie input found in a regular meal yet preserve its nutritional values. They contain protein as well as a multitude of nutrients, which represent a key factor in losing fat or keeping a healthy body.

Meal replacements could be found in many forms since they’re easy to prepare and ready to be eaten. Shakes, meal bars, and powders that are mixed with milk are the most common types. Shakes, more specifically, are a good alternative for meals that are high in fat.

Shakes and meal replacements are especially great because they contain a ton less fat and typically can provide even greater nutrition than you would get from just about any home cooked meal.

Contrary to fruit juices or protein bars, meal replacements can replace an 800-calorie dish with a shake that keeps the same macro and micronutrients with 70% fewer calories.

What is Soylent?

What is Soylent

As the company claims, Soylent offers healthy, practical ailments beneficial for the body and the environment. Soylent customers often get premixed drink bottles or the powder to prepare drinks to their liking so they can enjoy it at home, in the park while jogging, on your way to work, with friends, etc.

The favored Soylent café drink can be enjoyed in three different aromas: vanilla, mocha, and chai. It gives a healthy boost of caffeine; many users consume it as a substitution for breakfast. This is in fact what I did until I found a better alternative to Soylent, which was Kachava.

As it includes a decent amount of protein and fat, the drink can make an excellent replacement for the toxically sugary drinks offered in supermarkets.

Soylent offers a variety of products that adapts to the customer’s needs. It could be an already mixed drink (that comes in numerous flavors like strawberry, cacao, vanilla, and banana), a powder so you can prepare your own drinks or if you’re feeling extra creative, put some powder in your blender, add the fruits or vegetables of your choosing and mix so you can make your own Soylent smoothie.

Last but not least, the company considered your late-night/evening snack and offered its customers a premixed drink as a healthy substitute.

Many customers think that one of the reasons why they chose Soylent is because the company promotes itself as an eco-friendly grouping.

To remain loyal to its cause, Soylent uses recyclable containers. In addition, they claim that their aliment system is better for the earth since it demands less water and yields fewer CO2 than cattle, and it needs to be refrigerated for way less time than fresh fruits and vegetables.

The organization also proclaims that it participates in food bank programs that provide aliments to fight against world hunger around the globe.

What’s in Soylent That Makes It Such a Good Meal Replacement?

Nutritional components that go into Soylent meal replacement

The components listed on the bottle of Soylent drinks might not be so comprehensible to the average customer since the names are not as common. Water (not milk) is the main ingredient in the premixed beverage which makes it a great option for those with sensitive stomachs, like myself, although the other alternatives down below are also great options as well.

Other than water, Soylent drinks are comprised of 5 other ingredients:

Canola Oil

Canola Oil is one of the ingredients that go into making Soylent meal replacement

Nearly every kitchen has canola oil on its shelves since it’s the go-to cooking oil. It provides a healthy source of monosaturated fatty acids.

Maltodextrin

Maltodextrin is one of the nutritional components that go into making Soylent meal replacement

Maltodextrin is a food additive that is usually used as a thickening agent in order to give products a creamier texture. It’s a processed food powder that comes from aliments rich in starch like rice, corn, wheat, or potatoes and has excessive amounts of glycemic index

High-Oleic Sunflower Oil

Another ingredient that goes into making Soylent meal replacement is High-Oleic Sunflower Oil

As the name already gives it, this oil is rich in oleic acid, which is a healthy monosaturated fatty acid that keeps the heart healthy, unlike other forms of fat, trans and saturated fat, to name a few.

Soy Protein Isolate

Soy Protein Isolate is one of the ingredients that go into making the Soylent meal replacement

Soy is a protein that is extracted from plants. The consumption of soy has always been a hot topic since it produces phytoestrogens that act like estrogen in your body.

However, numerous savants, healthy consumers, and exercisers still include soy-based aliments in their diets, as well as soy protein isolate (which is a supplement that is comprised of 90% protein), in order to satisfy their daily protein intake. Soy protein is a great source of protein for when you need something to go to bed with as it is a slow acting protein.

Isomaltulose

Isomaltulose is an ingredient that goes into making Soylent meal replacement

Isomaltulose, according to experts, is a healthier alternative for sugar since it takes more time to be digested and could stabilize blood sugar levels.

Best Soylent Alternatives

Down below are all better and some cheaper options that you can substitute Soylent out for.

Ka’chava – Most Similiar to Soylent, Yet Better

My favorite - I Use it Everyday

Ka’chava is really close to Soylent in some ways but is better in other ways

Ka’chava is a plant-based protein mix whose creators claim is “the cleanest and most nutrient-dense replacement meal” that one can get their hands on.

I personally prefer the Vanilla Flavor. I have used it everyday for the last 3 years or so and I can't say enough good things about it. Not to mention that this has got to be the best protein shake to mix with smoothies because of how easy it blends and because of how good it taste.

I have made a ton of personal Kachava recipes that you can check out here if you want to see the tasty smoothies that I am making.

If I miss a morning I can actually tell I feel sluggish and just not as sharp as I do when I get my Shake in. Maybe it's placebo, but the superfood profile is the best around and I can tell it really effects me.

All of its ingredients are high-quality ones that are mixed together to create this great on-the-go meal shake. It’s highly effective for anyone who’s looking to lose or manage weight, especially if you take it instead of meals that are less healthy. Not to mention, it fills you up pretty quickly without causing any bloating or uncomfortable feeling.

Out of all the alternatives that I’m going to discuss, Ka’chava is the one that resembles Soylent most. In my opinion, it is better than Soylent hence why I’ve been using it for the last three years or so. I personally recommend the vanilla flavor but then again, to each their own.

Ka’chava Ingredients and Nutrition Facts

Ka’chava nutrition label

Ka’chava features the right number of essentials required by the human body, such as proteins, fiber, and a decent amount of good fat, amongst other things. Such a combination helps to promote healthy living and eliminate random hunger cravings.

A single serving of Ka’chava contains 24g of carbohydrates, 25g of protein, 4.5g of fat, and 9g of fiber. It’s also vegan friendly, gluten, soy, and dairy-free. Additionally, Ka'chava is a creatine free meal replacement powder, doesn’t contain any artificial ingredients or preservatives of any kind and when you consider that one shake replaces a meal it is actually very low in sodium.

It comes in two different flavors, vanilla and chocolate. As I’ve said before, I personally prefer the Vanilla flavor but if you’re into chocolate more, then go for it.

Does it Contain Allergens?

To put it short, no. It’s plant-based, soy-free, gluten-free, dairy-free, and contains no artificial flavors, coloring agents, or preservatives.

Who Should Get Ka’chava?

Ka’chava is great for people who are on the move and want to have a fast meal replacement serving

Honestly, I think Ka’chava is best for someone who’s always on the move or simply someone who doesn’t want to spend any extra time preparing a meal.

It’s also obviously perfect for anyone who’s sensitive to dairy, soy, gluten, or all. Additionally, people who want to maintain a low-fat, vegan diet would love this product.

You also get free shipping within the US for any order that’s two bags or more.

Shakeology – Best Alternative, But More Expensive

Shakeology is another great alternative to Soylent but it's a bit more expensive

Similar to Soylent and Ka’chava, Shakeology is yet another nutritional shake that’s marketing as a superfood replacement.

It’s rich in proteins, vitamins, minerals, probiotics, adaptogens, etc. Basically, anything and everything that will offer you a much richer dietary intake than usual.

The manufacturer, BeachBody, is well-renowned for its production of nutrition programs, supplements, and even workout videos. They utilize a multi-level marketing strategy when it comes to Shakeology and some of their other products. In other words, they rely on independent contractors that directly sell their products to you. Word of mouth advertising.

We recently did a full comparison between Shakeology and Herbalife and found that even though Herbalife is trying to copy and become the competition for Shakeology, we found Shakeology to be far superior in almost every way.

Shakeology comes in five basic flavors, with vegan variations available in each, and they are Vanilla, Chocolate, Latte, Strawberry, Green Berry.

The company claims that this beverage promotes weight loss and healthy eating, boosts energy levels, fits right in with whole foods, improves bowel regularity and digestion, etc.

Shakeology Ingredients and Nutrition Facts

Shakeology nutrition label

According to Beachbody, the Shakeology superfood shape will give your body a chance to cleanse itself and will make it much easier for your digestive system to do its job, leading you to a healthy lifestyle.

The main ingredients of a single serving of Shakeology include:

  • Vitamins A, C, D, E, K1, B1, B2, B3, B6, and B12
  • Biotin
  • Calcium
  • Iron
  • Folic Acid
  • Iodine
  • Zinc
  • Magnesium
  • Chromium
  • Whey Protein

In addition to these ingredients, Shakeology also includes a variety of Proprietary Adaptogen and Phytonutrient Antioxidant blends. Such blends are made up of organic, natural ingredients such as acai powder, blue-green algae, barley grass, spinach powder, just to name a few.

One of the key ingredients of Shakeology is its isolated whey protein, which is the main replacement of the soy proteins that you’d find in other shakes. This protein is essential in building lean muscle and increasing your overall stamina. It’ll help your muscles to recover faster than usual after each workout in addition to promoting brain function.

Such a rich list of ingredients can explain why Shakeology is a very popular blend and continues to be one of the bestselling products by Beachbody.

Does It Contain Allergens?

All of the Shakeology flavors contain zero artificial sweeteners and are gluten-free.

However, it is important to keep in mind that all Shakeology formulas are made in a facility that also processes known allergens such as milk, egg, fish, tree nuts, soy, amongst other things. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not undermining Beachbody’s ability to watch over their chain of production, but mistakes can happen, and you as a client deserve to know.

Who Is It Best For?

Shakeology is great for people who want to have the premium option when it comes to meal replacements

Shakeology is the perfect blend for anyone who’s looking for a top-notch replacement that can handle any diet or program you throw at it.

Cost

Shakeology's pricing

Compared to other products on the market, Shakeology is a bit on the expensive side, costing around four bucks per serving ($129.95 for a 30-serving bag), but it’s very much worth it for those that can afford it.

Ample Meal Replacement – Best Natural Alternative

Ample Meal Replacement is a great natural alternative to Soylent

Ample, a US-based meal replacement brand, focuses on providing shakes that are mostly natural. They offer low carb vegan and non-vegan shakes like Soylent. However, they tend to use higher quality ingredients.

Contrary to Soylent, Ample focuses on offering organic shakes that contain extra ingredients such as probiotics, which will improve your gut health. Usually, you’ll need to take green supplements on top of your meal shake to get access to such ingredients.

However, it is important to keep in mind that the presence of such premium ingredients comes with a consequent rise in price. Still, this may be a deciding factor for many people when it comes to choosing Ample over Soylent.

You can buy Ample powders in handy bottles, ideal if you’re someone who’s always getting on the go, or you can get them in big pouches, which are the cheaper option of the two. The latter option is the better one if you’re someone who tends to consume their shakes at home, or you simply want to be environmentally friendly.

What Makes Soylent So Good? And Should You Just Get It?

What is great about Soylent and should you just get it

What Are Customers Saying?

Most people like it. It is nutritional, sweet, and smooth, so easy to like. Many people have been living on Soylent for years, and they like the simplicity and health benefits it offers, which is why this product has plenty of rave reviews across different platforms, such as Amazon.

Soylent positive customer review

What’s Soylent comprised of? – Ingredient Rundown

Soylent nutrition label

Soylent Drink is a plant-based, ready to drink a shake that offers 20% of the daily needed nutrients.

It is low in carbohydrates and adequately high in fat. It is worth mentioning that Soylent endorses genetically engineered food, and consequently, might utilize it as the main ingredient.

Even though it includes caffeine, Soylent café, or Coffiest and Soylent beverages are like two peas in a pod for nutritional value.

  • Soylent café Vanilla: 150mg (roughly a cup of coffee)
  • Soylent café Mocha: 150mg
  • Soylent café Chai: 30mg

Here’s Soylent original nutrition label. The nutrients might lightly vary.

Carbs

Per serving (400Kcal):

  • Total carbs: 36g, 12% of DV
  • Total sugars: 9g
  • Of which added: 9g, 18% of DV
  • Fibers: 3g, 12% of DV

Isomaltulose and maltodextrin are the primary carbohydrates sources. Soylent glycemic index is below50. Presumably, due to the fact that the beverage consists of up to 50% fats (that curtails the digestive process). Commonly, this indicates a sluggish energy emission in addition to limiting blood glucose fluctuations.

Many customers are displeased with the fact that Soylent’s beverage doesn’t include as much fiber. According to the food and drug administration, 65% of Americans fail to satisfy their daily intake, and consequently, we think that Soylent should invest further effort concerning this matter. Fortunately, solutions to this problem exist, as you can include high-fiber nibbles or psyllium husk pills into your diet.

Fats

Sunflower oil is the primary source of fats. It’s usually comprised of 59% linolenic acid, 30% oleic acid, 6% stearic, and 5% palmitic. But numerous genetically engineered organisms’ strains have been modified in a way that it takes away some essential vitamins and disproportions it. (vitamin E is an exception).

Soylent incorporates a sunflower oil that is rich in oleic acid, high in monounsaturated fats. The problem with sunflower oil is the omega-3 and omega-6 proportions. Commonly a ratio closer to 1 is advised. However, sunflower oil has up to 700% more omega-6 than there is omega-3.

As a solution, include fish like tuna, salmon, mackerel, and herring in your diet, nuts like walnuts and almonds are also recommended.

On the positive side, Soylent’s beverage mix does not include trans-fats nor hydrogenated fatty acids. In addition, Soylent drink includes an omega-3 rich canola oil.

Protein

Soylent beverage includes 20g of protein per 400Kcal

The protein found in the drink originates from soy protein isolate, which is an extremely purified version of soy protein that has up to 90% protein content. It also includes the entirety of the fundamental amino acids that the human body cannot amalgamate on its own.

Soy protein is the primary choice when it comes to vegan proteins, thanks to its high absorption rate.

Vitamin Blend
